Innovative Filtration Solution for Viscous Thermic Fluid in Textile Processing

Introduction

A textile processor in Bhilwara faced a challenge: their thermic fluid had turned black and become highly viscous, with an analysis revealing approximately 11% total carbon content. Although the oil remained flowable at room temperature, changing the oil was not feasible due to cost and production pressures.

They sought a simple, innovative solution from Dr. Thermic Fluid – EXIMIOUS.

Background

Maintaining the quality of thermic fluid is crucial. High carbon levels can lead to viscosity issues, impacting heat transfer and overall system performance. Finding a cost-effective solution to restore the fluid’s quality was essential.

Challenges

  • High Carbon Content: The oil had accumulated significant carbon, leading to changes in its physical properties.
  • Viscosity Issues: The blackened, viscous oil could lead to choking of the system.
  • Cost Constraints: Changing the oil was not a viable option due to cost and production demands.

Dr. Thermic Fluid – EXIMIOUS was approached to provide a simple and effective solution.

Solution

It was decided to achieve results by installing a duplex thermic fluid filtration system:

  • Filtration System Installation: After reviewing the analysis and discussing options with the customer, we supplied a duplex filtration system designed for continuous operation.
  • Operator Training: The plant operators were trained on the system’s operation, ensuring they could effectively manage the filtration process.
  • Advanced Filtration Setup: The duplex system featured a davit arm and cleaning attachment, simplifying maintenance. Filtration commenced at 50 microns, gradually reducing to 5 microns in stages.
  • Continuous Operation: The system was operated continuously until no contaminants were detected at the 5-micron level. As a preventive measure, a 3-micron filter was subsequently installed.

Results

  • Improved Oil Characteristics: Over time, the condition of the oil significantly improved, enhancing its flowability and performance.
  • Cost Savings: Approximately 70,000 litres of oil were saved from being discarded, providing substantial cost savings for the textile processor.
  • Efficient Operations: The continuous filtration ensured that the thermic fluid maintained optimal quality, supporting uninterrupted production.

Conclusion

A duplex filtration system that restored the thermic fluid’s quality and saved significant resources.
