Introduction
A major data centre operates 24/7, 365 days a year, requiring strict temperature control to cool its servers. Recently, the chilled water exhibited a brownish-red colour, indicating corrosion. With water scarcity and high costs associated with draining, a shutdown was not an option.
Background
Maintaining clean chilled water is crucial for optimal cooling performance in data centres. Corrosion can lead to significant operational challenges and increased maintenance costs, making it essential to address the issue without disrupting operations.
Challenges
- Presence of corrosion products in the chilled water, indicated by discoloration.
- Inability to shut down the system due to continuous operation requirements.
- High costs and water scarcity made draining impractical.
Solution
The data centre management turned to Eximious, recognized for its innovative solutions. Eximious implemented the following steps:
- Installation of Chillcare Micro-Filtration System: This system effectively removed corrosion products from the water, improving water quality.
- Online Descaling with D’scale CS: After cleaning the system, Eximious descaled the entire pipeline online, ensuring optimal flow and efficiency.
- Dosing with CORRONIL CW: To protect against future corrosion, the system was dosed with CORRONIL CW, providing long-term protection.
Results
- Trouble-Free Operation: The system has been running efficiently for the last 14 years, maintaining optimal temperature differentials in the air handling units (AHUs).
- Clear and Efficient Water: The chilled water is now clear and free of corrosion products, contributing to effective cooling operations.
Conclusion
Through the innovative approach of Eximious, including the use of the Chillcare system and CORRONIL CW, the data centre successfully maintained clean chilled water and ensured reliable cooling for its critical operations.
